On Sunday, August 31, 2025 Mr. Vernon Lee Jewell, beloved husband of the late Sadie Jewell of Calgary, Alberta passed away at the age of 94 years.
Vern was born on the family farm on June 11, 1931, in Nanton, Alberta. He was one of the beloved sons of his parents, Blanche and Raymond Jewell, who inspired him with their tireless work ethic and commitment to family values. As a young boy, Vern followed his family to Dawson Creek from 1941 to 1944 while his father contributed to the construction of the Alaska Highway during the war. It was during these formative years that he learned the importance of perseverance and the strength of family ties.
After the war, the Kingsway Cabins were relocated in Edmonton and then the family settled back in Calgary, where they made their home on 510 Memorial Drive NW. It was here that Vern developed a passion for sports, particularly baseball, which gained him attention as he was even scouted by U.S. teams. His teenage years at Crescent Heights High School were marked by a love story as he met his future wife, Sadie, although he chose to wait until completing his education at the Radio College of Canada in Toronto before taking that significant step.
Upon his return to Calgary, Vern embarked on a successful career in the seismic industry and married Sadie. They welcomed their first child, Shannon, into the world in a small trailer in Three Hills, Alberta, followed by the joy of four more children while residing in Forest Lawn. In 1967, the family moved to Brentwood, where Vern achieved a significant milestone by purchasing Jensen Radio and Television on Center Street with partners Ray and Harvey. With the unwavering support of his father-in-law, Alf, and the dedication of friends and family, Vern devoted himself to his work until the age of 75.
His contributions to the field of electronics were noteworthy; he played an essential role in creating the provincial apprenticeship program for Alberta as well as working closely with the Electronic Retail Service Dealers Association of Alberta for many years. His passion extended beyond work into his love for travel. Vern took pride in exploring the vast beauty of North America alongside his family and cherished moments spent on trips around all of Canada and the United States. His adventures also took him to international destinations including Italy, Mexico, Alaska, and New Zealand, reflecting his deep appreciation for diverse cultures and experiences.
Vern's legacy is rooted in his belief in the importance of family, friendships, and community. A respected figure in Calgary, he was known for his kindness, generosity, and commitment to making his city a better place. In his later years, Vern found solace and joy with his partner, Esther, as they traveled together and sought out estate sales, reveling in the excitement of discovery during those shared escapades.
Though he has departed from this world, the memories and impact of Vernon Lee Jewell will remain in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be remembered not only for his accomplishments but also for the love and warmth he brought to those around him.
