Valerie Jeanette Berthiaume

December 17, 1934 — April 17, 2021

It is with a very sad heart that we announce the passing of Valerie Jeanette Berthiaume. She left us peacefully in Calgary, Alberta on Saturday, April 17, 2021 at the age of 86 years old.

Valerie is predeceased by the love of her life, Al Bencher, her parents; Ewart (Dave) and Heather Davis, her siblings; Allan Davis and Gail Takeda.

Born on December 17, 1934 in Calgary, Alberta, Valerie moved to the BC coast at a young age with her family and lived mostly in Port Alberni, when she found her love of the ocean. In 1953 she joined the Canadian Air Force and by 1960 made her way to Prince George where she worked as an operator for B.C. Tel until 1990. By that time, her two sons had moved away and Valerie decided to move to Victoria to be closer to her mother, brother and two sisters, but remained near her beloved ocean. Valerie retired from B.C. Tel in 1993.

In 2018, Valerie made one last big move to Calgary to be with her two sons, two granddaughters and great grandchildren.

She is lovingly remembered by her sons Steve Berthiaume and Randy Bencher; grandchildren and spouses; Breanne & Paul Tallon and Teanna & Tyler Jensen-Salters; her great grandchildren; Skyla & Odin Jensen-Salters and her sister; Sydney Balcke. Her many nieces, nephews and extended family will miss her dearly.

Valerie had many passions and was a big part of starting up One Parent Families, Evergreen Chapter and was involved in the Marti Gras (in Prince George, BC) where she helped organize the bed races and snow golf for many years.

In retirement, Valerie kept herself active doing the things she loved. She had a special place in her heart for her granddaughters, (Breanne & Teanna) taking them camping every summer around Vancouver Inland, BC and volunteered at the Mount Tolmie hospital’s gift shop (Victoria, BC). She was also a lunch time supervisor at a Victoria school and went on a 21-day USA tour, serving as a cook for Breanne’s Drum Corp in 2001. Valerie was involved in many other community activities and always had something fun on the go!

Valerie will be truly missed by everyone who was lucky enough to be touched by her presence. She was an extremely kind sole and is remembered for her love of sending out cards for every occasion to the people she cared about most. She loved us all so much!

Valerie Jeanette Berthiaume’s final resting place will be in the Bencher family plot with Al Bencher in Prince George.
