O’Hara, Sydney Roy “Scientist” passed away peacefully at the Peter Lougheed Centre in Calgary, Alberta on March 14, 2026. Sydney was born in St. Mary’s, Jamaica on September 8, 1935, to Whilel and David O’Hara. He later immigrated to Canada and made Calgary, Alberta his home. He established a successful career with CP Rail, where he worked for many years before retiring.
Sydney truly knew how to live life to the fullest and rarely let anything get him down. He could often be found in the kitchen preparing his beloved Jamaican dishes and enjoyed listening to music, especially reggae and gospel. He loved being surrounded by family and friends and often shared stories of his upbringing in Jamaica.
He is survived by his sister Muriel Saddler; his children Sydney Tony, Effner David, Jasette, and Heather; his son-in-law Roland; 15 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind a beloved family friend, Carlton, who remained by Sydney’s side during his final days, his special friend Joan, and many other relatives and friends who will cherish his memory.
The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the staff of Unit 38 at the Peter Lougheed Centre for the care and compassion they provided to Sydney during his final days.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.
