It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother and grandmother, Shirley Henwood, who passed away peacefully on Friday, January 10, 2014 at the age of 84 years. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughters, Jacqueline (Thomas) and Geraldine; grandsons, Christopher and Kyle; numerous nieces and nephews; and many more family and friends. Shirley was born and raised in Calgary. She attended Stanley Jones Elementary and Crescent Heights High Schools. After school, she lied about her age so she could join the Navy Reserves where she served for 5 years starting in 1952. After the Navy, she worked for a number of different companies, including the family business. In 1973 she began her career working for the Calgary Board of Education. She started working at Highfield, Valley View Elementary and retired from Forest Lawn High School. She made many long time friends while working for the CBE and while she was a member of the Women of the Moose. About 18 years ago Shirley moved to Beiseker, AB to be closer to her two daughters. They were a very close knit family. While in Beiseker she met her best friend Joe Hagel. They spent their days together playing cards and traveling. The family would like to thank Dr. Sharma and Dr. Wowk and all the nurses and staff of Unit 54 of the Peter Lougheed Hospital for their care, kindness and understanding. At Shirley’s request, there will be no formal Funeral Services. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Alberta & NWT (#134, 1935 – 32 Avenue NE, Calgary, AB T2E 7C8).
