Shirley Ann Hooper

Shirley Ann Hooper, a beloved mother, sister, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on June 2, 2025, at the Peter Lougheed Centre. Born on July 24, 1936, in Calgary, Alberta, and raised on the family farm in Rockford, Shirley illuminated the lives of those around her with kindness, creativity, and warmth.

For two decades, Shirley dedicated herself to her role as a clerical aid with the Calgary Separate School District, where her meticulous nature and caring attitude had a profound impact on her colleagues and the students she encountered. Her career also included significant stints at United Grain Growers and Alberta Hail & Crop Insurance Corporation, complemented by joyful experiences in retail work, each role contributing to the tapestry of her rich life.

Shirley was not just defined by her work; her heart was deeply immersed in her passions. A true lover of horses and cats, she found solace and companionship in their gentle presence. Her artistic flair manifested in beautiful pencil drawings of horses and intricate copper tooling that showcased her innate talent. She delighted in keeping her mind engaged through word searches, often sharing these moments of joy with loved ones. Shirley poured her nurturing spirit into teaching her daughter, Dawn, the delicate arts of needlecrafts, including embroidery and crochet.

Her family will fondly remember her for her exceptional baking skills, especially her delectable chocolate chip cookies, Nanaimo bars, and chocolate rice crisp squares. Each creation carried a little piece of her heart and brought warmth to her home, infusing love into every gathering.

Shirley was a remarkable cancer survivor, an achievement that defined her resilience and strength. She faced challenges with grace, reminding all who loved her that life is precious and must be cherished.

She is survived by her loving daughter, Dawn, and her son, Nevis (Grace). She leaves behind her beloved siblings: Gordiana, Marie, Normie, and Gerald, along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family who will forever carry her memory in their hearts.

Shirley was predeceased by her parents, Irvin and Tracy; her husband, David; and her siblings: Adele, Francis, Irvin, and Gordon. Each of them lives on in the stories and love shared by those who knew Shirley.

As we bid farewell to this extraordinary woman, we celebrate the legacy she leaves behind—a tapestry woven with love, creativity, and an indomitable spirit that inspires all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her light will forever shine in our hearts.

Cremation has taken place. Shirley's final resting place will be with her parents at Saint Rita's Catholic Cemetery in Rockyford, AB
