Sherrill Lynn Paterson

With profound sadness, Gail and Wayne Paterson announce the peaceful passing of their beloved daughter, Sherri Paterson, in the early morning of Friday, August 7, 2026, at the age of 57.

Sherri was born on November 10, 1968. Even as a baby, Sherri showed the spirited determination that would remain with her throughout her life. She never crawled; instead, she happily bounced around on her bottom - an early glimpse of how she would move through the world: with plenty of bounce, a joyful spirit and her own wonderfully determined way of forging ahead.

That same independent spirit appeared during a family camping trip when Sherri was not yet two. After somehow tumbling gently out of the family camper, she did not just cry and wait to be rescued. She simply picked herself up, found the door and knocked to be let back inside - another early glimpse of Sherri’s ability to recover from a setback, work out what to do next and carry on.

Family life was filled with camping trips, summers at the cottage on Gull Lake and days spent near the water. Sherri loved being outdoors and enjoyed swimming, horseback riding and family adventures. Among Gail and Wayne’s favourite memories is a childhood trip to Disneyland with her younger brother, Mike. Dressed in matching bright-yellow outfits, the two ran excitedly together to greet the Disney characters - a joyful memory of the closeness and adventures they shared as children.

Sherri and Mike shared the closeness, friendship and occasional squabbles of a brother and sister growing up only a year and a half apart. Mike passed away in 1994, an enormous loss for Sherri and her parents. She carried her love for him throughout her life.

At heart, Sherri had an extraordinary capacity to care. She listened, understood and responded with genuine compassion. She did more than notice when someone needed kindness - she stepped forward, spoke up for them and found ways to make their lives better. This gift revealed itself early. As a teenager, families instinctively trusted her with their children, and by the age of 18 she had found a natural calling in childcare. For Sherri, caring for children was never simply a job; it was an expression of who she was.

Sherri brought imagination, warmth and enthusiasm to the children in her care. She even turned the weekly clean-up into something they anticipated, planning Fridays as “party days” when everyone joined in to tidy and organize the room while having fun together. On Mother’s Day, Sherri created something special for the children and their mothers, proudly introducing Gail by saying, “This is my mommy.”

One particularly treasured memory was the day Wayne brought the family’s two Dalmatians, Teddy and George, to visit Sherri’s daycare. The children erupted with excitement, calling them “fire dogs.” The visit was such a success that Teddy and George were invited back a second time.

The children adored Sherri, and Sherri adored them. Her working life included other roles, but caring for children was her true calling.

Sherri loved to sing and spent time singing in a choir. Horseback riding held a special place in her heart, and for several summers she attended Griffin Ranch, where she spent time riding and helping to care for her horse. Sherri’s creativity also found expression in needlepoint, a craft she enjoyed at the Chinook Guild of Fibre Arts.

In the last three years of her life, Sherri found immense happiness in her beloved Morkie, Rosie. Gail and Wayne gave Rosie to her as an early Christmas gift when Rosie was just four months old. Sherri chose her name immediately, feeling that the little dog looked like a Rosie. The two became inseparable.

Sherri cared for Rosie tenderly, and Rosie returned that love with complete devotion, remaining close beside her throughout Sherri’s final months.

To Gail and Wayne, Sherri was far more than a beloved daughter - she was the heart of their lives. For Wayne, Sherri was his little girl until her last breath. For Gail, Sherri was her best friend and dearest companion. They shared the rhythms of everyday life, countless moments of laughter and the strength to face life’s most difficult times together. Their bond was woven through everything, and the love and friendship they shared will remain one of the most cherished parts of Gail’s life.

Despite the health challenges Sherri faced, her life contained love, laughter, family adventures and deep companionship. She brought light into a room and could be both sweet and delightfully feisty. Above all, she was a loving daughter, a devoted sister, a loyal friend and a compassionate person who instinctively looked out for others.

Sherri will be forever loved and profoundly missed by her parents, Gail and Wayne Paterson; her beloved, Rosie; her aunt, Elaine; her cousins;  and friends whose lives she touched, including her special friends, Sherri Armitage, Ruchi Riley & Cynthia Lamonaca. She was predeceased by her cherished brother, Mike, who passed away in 1994; her grandma & grandpa Fielding; and her uncle Ray.

A Celebration of Sherri’s Life will be held on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at a family friend’s home in Calgary. Family and friends will gather to share memories and honour the joy Sherri brought to others. Guests are invited to remain afterward for a light luncheon and time together.

In lieu of flowers if desired, memorial donations may be made in Sherrill's name to the Canadian Cancer Society for Melanoma Research.
