Ronny van der Leer

June 24, 1964 — January 20, 2026

Calgary, Alberta

Ronny van der Leer, a beloved son, partner, father, brother, and friend, passed away in Calgary, Alberta on January 20, 2026, at the age of 61. Born on June 24, 1964, in Holland, Rotterdam, Netherlands, Ronny moved to Canada at the tender age of five. He began his journey in Ottawa before settling in Calgary, where he lived with his parents and grandparents until they established their own homestead in Bowness.

Ronny's educational journey took him through Sir William Van Horne High School and James Fowler High School, where he quickly adapted to his new surroundings, mastering the English language with remarkable ease. His early work experiences were shaped by his afterschool jobs at Nick's Steakhouse and his mother’s Hobby Shop, where he found joy in assembling various models. His career path led him to work at Domo gas station before he dedicated the next 30 years of his life as a pipe-layer.

In addition to his professional pursuits, Ronny proudly served in the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, demonstrating his commitment to his country. Outside of work, he embraced a variety of hobbies; he was passionate about riding motorcycles and was an avid firearms enthusiast.

Ronny is survived by his loving partner of 19 years, Lisa Rickard, along with his mother, Leonie van der Leer; his children, Steven van der Leer and Alana van der Leer; his step-children, Sam Rickard, Teri Rickard, and Raphael Rickard; and his brother, John van der Leer. He also leaves behind a legacy of eight grandchildren – Chance & Asher Howell, Alex, Kateland, Hero-Fate, Harlow, Alex, and Oliver – as well as his nieces, Stephanie and Michelle van der Leer.

The loss of Ronny will be profoundly felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His funeral service will be held on February 3, 2026, at 12:00 PM at Pierson's Funeral Services (4121 17th Ave SE, Calgary, AB) followed by a graveside service at the Rocky View Garden of Peace Cemetery (243208 Garden Rd, Calgary, AB) at 2:00 PM.
