Ronald Merle Peterson

August 1, 1931 — September 16, 2025

Calgary, Alberta

Ronald Merle Peterson was born on August 1st, 1931 in Sterling, Alberta. Ronald was the second child born, as well as his twin brother, Rulon. He had three brothers and one sister. Ronald was born into a family with loving parents, Elgin Peterson and Doreen Layne Peterson. Ronald was raised in Sterling as a youngster. However, the family later moved to Lethbridge, and he attended Lethbridge Collegiate Institute (L.C.I.) with his identical twin brother Rulon. He and Rulon were very involved in athletics and other school activities. It was at LCI that Ronald met the love of his life, Nurae Karren Peterson and they would develop a loving relationship that would extend over 65 years.

After high school, Ronald decided to pursue a career in engineering, so in 1949 he attended the University of Alberta, where was an honour student. However, after three years of studying engineering, he decided to go on a mission. In June of 1952 he was called to serve for 2 ½ years for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Finland. Ronald learned Finnish fluently and he experienced many exciting adventures, including translating for the United States Olympic team at the Helsinki Olympic games in 1952. He even met and translated for the 1952 Olympic Gold Medal Decathlon Champion Bob Mathias.

After his mission was completed in 1954, he returned to Edmonton to complete his engineering degree and married Nurae Karren in July 1955. He moved back to Calgary and worked for 7 years in engineering but decided to return to university and enrolled in the law program at the University of Alberta in 1962. He graduated in 1964 and moved back to Calgary with Nurae to raised their four sons, Brent, Greg, Doug and Darrento and to pursue his law career. The family eventually moved to Lake Bonavista in 1969 and established their roots, while he practiced law and was a very respected member of the legal community in Calgary.

Ronald was very involved and held many positions in the Church and was a faithful and proud member of the LDS faith. He was a Bishop for 6 years from 1970 to 1976 and was affectionately known in this ward as "the Bish". He also served in other leadership positions in the Church, as well as volunteered in the Lake Bonavista community both coaching and providing assistance where needed. He was highly regarded in the Lake Bonavista community and loved by all with whom he associated.

Ronald was especially close to his family. He and Nurae raised their four boys who pursued their school, community and sporting activities. He rarely missed an event or game, and this trend continued with his 14 grandchildren as they both cheered them on from the sidelines. Ron and Nurae especially loved to travel, as they went on 22 cruises and travelled to every continent in the world and cherished those experiences. Ron and Nurae celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with their family in July of 2015 before Nurae's passing in 2017. Ron left a loving and cherished legacy with 4 children, 14 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren.
