Robert Fernie, our dearly loved brother, passed away unexpectedly at home in Clive, AB on September 26, 2025. Robert was born in Lacombe, AB in 1951. He was joined by his siblings Jim, Bruce, Christine Anne and David.
Robert’s father, Ern, who was a veteran of WWII, rejoined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1950 resulting in the young family moving to Greenwood, NS in 1954; Penhold, AB in 1962; Winnipeg, MB in 1965, retiring to Red Deer in 1967 and the family finally settling in Ponoka, AB in 1971.
Robert and his siblings were curious adventurers who enjoyed exploring their neighborhoods, playing outdoor games, board games, building puzzles together and playing cards.
After school, Robert worked as a high-rise window washer in Edmonton before joining the oilpatch in Alberta where he spent the remainder of his career. He was known for his honesty, and strength and was given the nickname “Bear”. When the work slowed, Robert explored solitary endeavors in nature such as panning for gold, trapping and bow hunting.
Robert liked to laugh and enjoyed making others laugh. He was always fun to be with and liked to think outside the box. He moved to Clive in 1982. He loved to lend a hand to anyone in need and could often be seen shovelling neighbours’ walkways or picking up their groceries and other supplies. He enjoyed his time as a volunteer fire fighter, helped construct the new arena and was frequently spotted picking up any litter that crossed his path. His great love was his 1978 Honda Goldwing 1000 motorcycle, which will be restored to its original glory by its new owner.
He leaves to mourn his brothers Jim (Lorna) and Bruce; sister Christine Anne of Rimbey; nieces Janice, Leah and Stevie; and nephews James and Kiel. He was predeceased by his parents Ernest Fernie (Gull Lake) and Kay Winterhalt (Fernie)(nee Danser) of Clive, AB, eldest brother Michael and youngest brother David. He will be dearly missed by all those whose lives he touched.
Robert will be laid to rest with his parents in the Fairview Cemetery in a private family service at a later date. Two memorial chairs and a side table will be added to the Clive community garden beside the library in his memory. Donations may be made to the U of A Heart Foundation at https://givetouhf.ca/donate-now-cardiac-fund/ or a charity of your choice.
