Richard Edward Shields, born on November 28, 1946, in Hamilton, ON, passed away on September 26, 2025, at Agape Hospice.
Rick joined the army at the age of 16, dedicating over 20 years to military service that included peacekeeping missions in Cyprus and Lebanon. This service shaped him and contributed to his remarkable outlook and appreciation for life.
He lived a life rich with experience, having embraced numerous roles throughout his career. A skilled handyman, Rick was adept at fixing just about anything, which he showcased particularly during his time in maintenance for Sun Life and Lake Bonavista. He was quite proud of his work at the Calgary Drop In Centre as an addictions counselor allowing him to make a meaningful impact on the lives of others.
Hobbies such as camping, fishing, and following hockey—especially cheering for The Calgary Flames—were cherished pastimes that enriched Rick's life.
He had a fantastic sense of humor and never failed to elicit a laugh. He had a natural ability to keep things light, a trait that endeared him to family and friends alike.
He leaves behind a loving family, including his children, Selina (Kerry), TJ (Melissa) & Trevor (Casey Lee); seven grandchildren, Brandon (Nikki), Chelsea, Taleah, Brooke, Tanner, Axel & Ayla; four great-grandchildren, Jackson, Xander, Dexter & Riley. Rick is also survived by his siblings, Mike, Joanne, Joe, and Vaughn, as well as a wide circle of extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Edith; brothers, Jimmy & Roger; and his 'not' wife, Wendy. Rick Shields will be deeply missed, remembered not only for his many skills and nurturing spirit but for the joy he brought to those around him.
A Celebration of Life for Rick will be held at The Royal Canadian Legion. Details to be announced.
