He will be lovingly remembered by his children Laurel (Dennis) Cooper of Corvallis, OR, and David (Linda) Maret, of Calgary, AB; grandchildren Gabriel Bilodeau, Morgan Cooper, Don (Heather) Maret, Kelly (Matthew) French, Joshua (Melissa) Maret, Nathan Maret and Kathryn (Mathew) Komm; eight great grandchildren; sister Dorothy Ann (James) Davis of Denver, CO; nieces and nephews Gail (Paul) Sease of Bakersfield, CA, Amy (Jim) Martin of Golden, CO, Michael (Penny) Maret of Cary, NC, Stefania Ingrid Sonnemann Maret of Mexico City, Mexico and Antonio Vallejo Sonnemann of Tapachula, Mexico. He was predeceased by his wife Doris “Penny” (1994), daughter Vivian Maret (2013), brother Darrell Maret (1986), and sister Gertrude Sonnemann (2009).

Ray was born on a ranch near Thermopolis, Wyoming to parents Don W. Maret and Anna Johnson Maret. He attended school there, graduating from Hot Springs County High School in 1948. After a couple of years at University of Wyoming, he joined the National Guard and served in the Korean War, where he was injured by an exploding shell. After a long recovery in the hospital, he returned to the University of Wyoming and earned a Masters degree in Geology in 1956, and graduated at the top of his class.

Ray worked with Husky Oil in Cody, Wyoming and in 1961 he, Penny and David, his adopted son, and their cat relocated with Husky Oil to Calgary, where daughters Vivian and Laurel were born in 1962 and 1964. After several years with Husky, Ray set up his own consultancy business, which he continued with into his later years.

Ray was an avid reader, artist and outdoorsman, enjoying fishing, horseback riding, skiing and hiking which he did right into his eighties. He also enjoyed gardening and kept up with the maintenance of his yard until he was 90. He was generous with his charitable contributions and with his concern for his family and neighbours.

A Graveside Service will be held for Ray’s cremated remains in the Monument Hill Cemetery (Thermopolis, WY) at a later date.
