Patricia Baker passed away in Calgary surrounded by love on May 7, 2025. She is survived by her son Philip, daughter Linda (Doug), granddaughters Catherine (David), Kyrstin and Ariana, great-grandchildren Nicolas and Lilyanna, sister-in-law Margaret, many wonderful extended family and friends in England and Canada.
Patricia Kathleen Mary was born in England to Alfred and May Wheatley in 1932, joining older brother, Stanley. The family resided in London and then in Essex. As a child during WW2, Patricia was evacuated from London to the safety of the countryside, and later her mother was able to join her. As a young woman Patricia worked as a stenographer, she was skilled in shorthand, typing and dictation from the age of 14. In Essex, there was a boy down the street she had known since age 10. One day, when the boy had become a man, he wrote a letter to Patricia, asking if she had a boyfriend yet. The neighbourhood family friends became family with Patricia’s marriage to Mervyn in 1954. After marriage, Philip was born in 1957 and young family made the choice to immigrate to Calgary, Canada. Linda was born and Patricia’s parents came from England to live with the family in 1964.
Patricia and Mervyn owned and operated Martinson Sign Service for many years. As Mervyn was the Signwriter, the bookkeeping and office work was Patricia’s fulltime job alongside being a mother and homemaker. Patricia enjoyed knitting, cooking, playing the piano, attending theatre productions, volunteering at Heritage Park, being an active member of her church and was always up to have a cup of tea with a friend.
Becoming and being a Grandmother was one of the greatest joys and delights that Patricia valued all her days. Patricia lived 27 years after Mervyn passed, surrounded by: many of his gifted woodworking pieces of furniture, a house lived in and enjoyed by 5 generations of family, her treasured & devoted son and daughter, Philip and Linda, beloved granddaughters and cherished great grandchildren.
Patricia never liked “Goodbye”, she preferred “See you next time” or “Until we meet again . . .” Patricia embraced her 92 years full of life and love. We are thankful and are all truly blessed to have had Patricia Kathleen Mary in our lives . . . May she find her light and loves, Beyond the Sunset.
