With deep sorrow we announce the passing of Nyaring Arok on Wednesday, September 10, 2025 at the age of 32 years.
Nyaring Arok was born on October 17, 1992 right between Malakal and Anakdair when Wurnyang attacked Malakal in 1992. That’s where she got her name Nyaring as it means "fleeing". During the war in 1996, Nyaring's mother, Tabitha Akech fled to an Ethiopian refugee camp called Pinyudo for a better life. They lived in Pinyudo for 6 years. Due to Tabitha's historical background and being a single mother of four children at the time, she was sponsored by the Catholic Church to immigrate into Canada. Nyaring was the last born of five siblings Abair, Akol, Maluk, Adut and Mat.
As a loving sister, auntie and devoted friend, Nyaring, touched the heart of everyone who knew her. She grew up in Calgary in a close-knit family and carried her strong family values throughout her life. She attended Connaught Elementary School and went on to graduate from Jack James High School in 2012, where she was star athlete playing volleyball and basketball. She then proceeded with her online studies at Columbia College and Bow Valley College. She took a few years off of school to work for Suncor, Bee and Acden in Fort Mac and JBS in Brooks. She left her job when she found out her mother was sick and needed full support. She moved to Brooks where she passed away suddenly; the cause of death is still unknown. She was always present at school events, communities, churches and family gatherings. Nyaring will be remembered for her hearty, gentle spirit, her unwavering faith and infectious smile. She poured love and kindness into every individual person. May her soul rest in peace.
