With heavy hearts, the family of Niel Patterson announces his passing on October 7, 2025, at the age of 98.
Born in Winton, New Zealand, Niel was the 10th of 11 children of Jim and Ida Patterson. He accepted Jesus Christ as his Saviour at age 13 and was baptized two years later—a faith that shaped his entire life. He emigrated to Canada in 1956 and married Mary in Niagara Falls. Together, they raised four children. The family lived in Seattle and New Zealand before settling in Calgary in 1973. He was a professional engineer and, recreationally, loved golf, tennis, curling, and travel. Niel was a longtime, dedicated member of Brentview Baptist Church and active in international ministry.
He treasured his blended family of nine children and is loved and missed by Kathy, Rick (Sharren), and Allan (Lori); along with his stepchildren Rosemarie (John), Patrick (Terri), Barbara (Les); daughter-in-law Charlene, Lauralee (Kirby); and 52 grand-, great-, and great-great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Mary (1992); his daughter, Deborah (2019); his son-in-law, Mark (2019); his stepson, Stewart (2000); and his second wife, Sophie (2025).
His greatest hope was for all to live for the Lord and find life more abundantly.
We thank the staff at Valley Ridge Lodge for the dignity, warmth, and care they showed Niel in his final chapter.
A Celebration of Niel’s Life will be held at Brentview Baptist Church (3512 Charleswood Dr. NW, Calgary) on Friday, November 14, 2025, at 1:30 p.m. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made to a charity of your choice in Niel’s name.
