It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Muriel Zelda Kostiuk, affectionately known as "Ma Barker," who left us on December 9, 2025, in Calgary, Alberta. Born on March 18, 1935, in St. Laurent, Saskatchewan, Muriel spent her formative years between Calgary and Prince Albert, where her vibrant spirit began to shine.
Muriel was indeed a force of nature, characterized by her short and sweet ways and immense heart, which contained a love that few could match. Her sharp wit and humor made her a joy to be around, and she had a unique ability to touch the lives of those fortunate enough to know her.
She cherished her sons deeply, holding a special place in her heart for each of them, viewing them as her world. Muriel's love and devotion to her family were incomparable, and she created lifelong bonds infused with laughter and warmth.
Muriel leaves behind her beloved sons: Wayne Kostiuk (son) of Ponoka; Jeff Stewart; Floyd Kostiuk; Terry Kostiuk (Paula) of Ponoka; and Kevin Kostiuk (Sheri). She is also survived by her dear sister, Delphine Stewart of Prince Albert, SK. Muriel was a proud grandmother to grandchildren: Sarah & Jordan of Cochrane, Daniella & Chris of Austin, TX, Jolene of Corpus Christi, TX, Jennica & Alex of Edmonton, AB, Travis of Ponoka, Melody (Richard) and Tara & Marvin of Calgary. Additionally, she enjoyed the love and affection of 13 great-grandchildren. Her spirit lives on with love from the Smith Family, Stewart Family, Either Family, Azur Family and Vandale Family.
In her passing, Muriel joins her late partner, Charlie Stewart, and her son, Brian Kostiuk. She is also reunited with her siblings: Rose, Agnus, Janette, Alban, Gerti, and Fernande.
Muriel’s legacy will continue through the lives she touched and the love she radiated. She will be profoundly missed by her family and friends.
