Michael Perry Cavanagh

August 19, 1959 — February 22, 2026

Calgary, Alberta

It is with the deepest sorrow that the family of Perry Cavanagh announces that he passed away peacefully on February 22, 2026, at the age of 66, following a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s.

Perry was born August 19, 1959, to Myrtle Cavanagh. He lived in Grenville, Quebec until the age of 18 when he moved to Calgary to follow the love of his life, Cathy.

Perry is lovingly remembered by his wife Cathy, his children Stephen (Julie), Shawn (Angela), Mathew (Margo), his grandchildren Bowen and Elle, his brothers Ronnie, Wayne (Charlene), his sisters Carole-Lynn and Sheila, and numerous beloved nieces and nephews. Perry is predeceased by his son Adam, mother Myrtle, brother-in-law Fred, and sister-in-law Margaret.

Perry was most known as an avid volunteer and a pillar of the Sport Community. He served as the President of Minor Hockey in Calgary, and volunteered for the St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Rotary International, The Knights of Columbus, and was the Lead Volunteer Coordinator for the 2012 World Junior Championship hosted in Calgary. His legacy in sport in Calgary is one that will have a lasting impact for generations to come. It was commemorated in 2022 with the renaming of Max Bell 2 to the “Perry Cavanagh Arena”. Perry was also recently honoured with the Robert Clark Legacy Award, which he will receive at the 2026 Alberta Hall of Fame Induction Gala. Despite his numerous accolades and achievements, Perry consistently stated that his greatest accomplishment in this life was the love and pride he had in his four boys.

The family wishes to thank the staff at the Peter Lougheed Hospital for their compassion, professionalism, and exemplary care and kindness.

To know Perry was to love him, and his absence leaves an endless void that cannot be filled. His spirit will live on in every memory, every keepsake, and every person whose life he touched.

A time of visitation will be held on Thursday, March 5, 2026 from 7:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 15 Templebow Road NE, Calgary, Alberta.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 6, 2026 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 15 Templebow Road NE, Calgary, Alberta. For those that are unable to attend, you may view the Funeral Mass by clicking this link.  Cremation will take place at the Foothills Crematorium following the Mass. Due to the Lenten season, flowers are gratefully declined.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages you to consider donating to KidSport Alberta (https://kidsportcanada.ca/alberta/calgary/donate/) in Perry’s name. It was always his desire that all children, from every facet of life, were able to participate in sport.
