Melissa Quigg passed away on August 4, 2025. Her sudden loss was unexpected, and her family is profoundly saddened. Melissa was only 52 years of age.
Melissa was the youngest of nine children. She was an early arrival and spent the first months of her life in the neo natal ICU. She was home for a short time and then back into hospital for surgery. Hospitals would soon become very familiar. Melissa would go on to have countless surgeries as they tried to correct her bent spine and combat the Cerebral palsy. Despite the medical challenges endured, she always pulled through.
Because she was so tiny at birth, only 2.2 lbs, she earned the nickname of “Mouse” and that’s when the Mickey Mouse infatuation began.
Melissa graduated from John Diefenbaker High School and her picture was in the newspaper as she rolled across the stage to claim her diploma with second class honors. As a young adult she completed not one but two degrees. We were all so proud of her receiving a Master of Arts in English.
Melissa was fluent in English, French and Tagalog. She called everyone her Ate (sister). She picked up a little Spanish and quickly learned any other language her caregiver’s used. She had that gene for languages.
Melissa knew that her purpose was to be a teacher. She taught ESL and managed a tutoring business for a few years. But her greatest strength was teaching us all everyday and she took every opportunity to do so. Just last week I heard her helping a Student Nurse to pronounce each and every pill as it was administered.
Melissa’s life was a testament to faith, strength, courage and love. She will be forever remembered and cherished.
Both of Melissa’s parents predeceased her along with one brother. Left to mourn are her brothers and sisters, Paulette (Tom), Wilma, Tom (Laurie), Christine (Doug), Bernice (Dave), Suzanne (Wayne), Ray (Lisa), along with extended family, and friends.
