Mary Jo Fairweather

December 30, 1956 — February 9, 2024

Calgary

Mary Jo Fairweather (nee Peggie) of Calgary, passed away peacefully February 9, 2024 at Calgary South Health Campus. Her husband was with her at the hospital in her final days. Born in Calgary, she was the daughter of the late Joe and May (Mary) Peggie. Besides her devoted husband, Michael she is survived by her cherished sons, Ryan (Erin) and Nathan (Alicia) of Calgary; and grandchildren, Rose, Sam, Emma and Asher; sisters Marion Holeton (Doug) of Calgary, Margaret Hill of Langley, BC, and brother Bill Peggie (Petrina) of Calgary. She also had many nephews and nieces. Nothing lifted her spirits quite like being with family.

She grew up on Calgary's north hill and went to Crescent Heights High School. Music was a life long interest. She studied violin from 5 years old and later switched to viola and became First Chair in Calgary's Youth Orchestra. She took harp lessons to prepare for a Calgary Youth Orchestra European tour. She was also a member of Calgary's first all girl rock band.

Mary Jo met Michael in 1978 and they were married 2 years later. They moved 14 times to domestic and international locations for Michael's employer. Mary Jo contributed to her community wherever they went. She helped in a variety of volunteer work that interested her especially in support of youth. A few examples include fund raising for a variety of programs and gardening activities for elementary school kids. She was involved with youth corrections, led a Cub Scout program, and helped manage a roller hockey league. She was an avid reader who started each day solving the New York Times cross word puzzle. She enjoyed the outdoors; gardening and kayaking gave her great pleasure until ALS limited her mobility.

Mary Jo's family thanks the ALS Society of Alberta and the South Health Campus - Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Clinic for their significant support and guidance since her ALS diagnosis.

At Mary Jo's request there will be no funeral service. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
