It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Leonard J. Galenza on December 7, 2025, at the age of 80 at Okotoks, Alberta. Born May 1, 1945 in Camrose, Alberta, Leonard lived a full and accomplished life marked by dedication to his family, career, and community.
Leonard was predeceased by his dearly loved wife of 25 years, Marilynn K. Taverner (1946-2024, Edmonton, Alberta); and his first wife of 25 years, Patsy Galenza (née Strynadka, 1947-1994, Wellington, Alberta), who passed after a long battle with cancer; his father, Carl Galenza (1909-1988, Bittern Lake, Alberta); his mother, Sophie Galenza (1920-2008, Devon, Alberta); his brother, Douglas Galenza (1949-2005, Camrose, Alberta); his sister-in-law, Mary Galenza (deceased, Camrose, Alberta); his mother-in-law, Helen Struk (1920-2016); and his brother-in-law, Gerry Strynadka (1946-1998).
Growing up on a farm with his siblings, Leonard as the oldest, spent his early years milking cows, driving tractor, hauling hay bales and keeping his siblings inline. After graduating from High School in Hay Lakes, Leonard's first job was at the Royal Bank in Bashaw, Alberta. Leonard loved cars and over the years he purchased and traded many. One of his first purchases and favorites was a bright yellow convertible Impala.
Leonard spent over 30 years in the Alberta oil industry as an accountant, ultimately retiring in 2001 as Controller and Chief Financial Officer for the Canadian operations of Weatherford Canada Ltd. He earned his accounting designation (CPA/CGA) in 1975 and was honored with a 30-year service ring upon retirement. In his later years, Leonard volunteered in administration with the Youth Singers of Calgary, contributing his expertise to support young talents.
Following retirement, he and Marilynn spent many years living their best life travelling extensively throughout North America living out of their motorhome, then living on Vancouver Island before returning to the Calgary area to be closer to family.
He is survived by his children, Angie Galenza (Jeff Peterson) and Robbie Galenza (Norm MacDonald); his grandsons, Brandon Peterson and Erik Peterson; his stepchildren, Todd Taverner (Anna Vespa) and Tim Taverner (Laura Sole); step grandchildren Connor Taverner, Cameron Roper, Maeghan Taverner, Delsin Taverner and Julian Stambene; his brother, Roger Galenza (Judy); his sister, Shirley Galenza; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Judy (Ross), Pat Benbow, Randy (Yvonne), and Kenny Strynadka; as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Leonard will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to his loved ones and his professional integrity.
At Len's request, he has been cremated. In the spring of 2026, his cremated remains will be placed in the Mausoleum at Queen's Park Cemetery as well as a grave at Hay Lakes, Alberta.
