On Feb. 13,2026 our beautiful and beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, sister and friend, Laurene Mae (Shaw) Sabey reached forth and took the outstretched hand of her cherished eternal companion, Grant Charles Sabey (d.2017) and stepped into eternity. This was a yearned for, (yet patiently awaited), joyful reunion for her. The most important things in life for her were her family and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Together with Grant, Laurene built a loving home for her 5 children - Craig (Marilyn), Cynthia (Dan), Rick (Sandra), Sandra (Steve), and Tracy. Over time she became the grandmother to 15 grandchildren, Nathan (Charissa), Rachel, Josh (Brook), Jacob (Shawna), Jordan (Barbara), Braden (Denali), Landon (Courtney), Amanda (Kevin), Matthew(Deb), Samuel (Catharyn), Becca, Jamie, Ashley (Shaun),Veronica (Sawyer) & Russell. Her family grew with her grandchildren's spouses, and she watched with joy as 25 (almost 26) great-grandchildren joined the throng. She was a strong, organized, generous, and loving matriarch to her precious bunch.
Laurene lived a righteous life, devoted to her church and to serving other members in her church group. She was a two-time Relief Society President, Primary President, Gospel Doctrine teacher, and Stake Young Women's President - just to name a few amongst the many callings she served in. She devoted herself to family history, completing over 150,000 indexing names. Alongside Grant, Laurene fulfilled a two-year service mission with the Church Mission Home in Calgary. Laurene loved the Gospel of Jesus Christ!
Laurene was passionate about reading, especially murder mysteries, thrillers, and historical fiction. It was not uncommon for her to complete 2 or 3 books in a week. She always dedicated herself to reading uplifting church books on Sundays though.
Laurene also had a flair for fashion and loved beautiful clothes. This interest saw Laurene travel to California to obtain her Color Consultant credential from the Fashion Academy there. Also, Laurene was an enthusiastic seamstress in her younger years, creating many lovely outfits for her girls, and stretch-and-sew T-shirts for her whole family.
Laurene was a wonderful cook. Her carrot cake and mincemeat tarts were to die for. She would often greet her young children after school with fresh bread, or warm chocolate chip or raisin cookies. In addition, Laurene was a wonderful event and party planner, both for her family and church group.
Laurene was fond of traveling and experiencing new cultures, countrysides, and climes. She succumbed many times to her itch for traveling, (usually with her darling Grant in tow), to many places around the world.
Laurene enjoyed all things cultural- the Philharmonic Orchestra, opera, dramatic productions, and dance. Besides relishing these areas in performance, Laurene developed her own talents in dance, song, drama, speech, and oil painting.
Laurene was also a very thoughtful person, never forgetting her children's or their spouse's birthdays, or missing the chance to send a thoughtful note or card to someone.
Laurene was also treasured by many nieces, nephews, and friends. We express our deep thanks to all who showed love and kindness to Laurene in her twilight years. We especially appreciate the loving care, friendship, and dedication of her personal caregivers, Alanna, Nora, Stacey, Cailey, Olga, Manpreet, Elizabeth, Maricris, Mireya, Seeta, Sharanjit. Thank you as well to Alberta Palliative Care Services and Longevity Care. We are also grateful for the compassion of the doctors, nurses and aids of Unit 54 at Foothills Medical Centre who ensured Laurene’s comfort and peace in her final days.
Laurene lived a happy, successful, and fulfilling life, and she will always be remembered and missed. She was a great lady, and we cherish and adore her.
Rest in peace, dear one. "The joy of the righteous shall be full forever." (2Ne 9:18)
