Kurt passed away peacefully at the Calgary Rockyview General Hospital, on Friday, January 12, 2024, aged 78 years. Kurt was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, May 22, 1945 and immigrated to Canada with his family at 11 years of age. He attended Blind River District High and graduated from Laurentian University with a BSc in Chemistry.
Kurt had an adventurous life, living and teaching in many parts of the world. His travels took him from Terrace Bay, Ontario to Grand Cayman and St. Maarten in the Caribbean. Here he enjoyed sailing, scuba diving and building a home. Upon returning to Canada, Kurt spent the remaining part of his career teaching at Walkerton District High and helped to establish the Co-op program at the Bruce Nuclear Power Plant. After retiring, he spent time teaching in Denmark and Kazakhstan.
Kurt could always be found lending a helping hand, and he embraced opportunities to tutor and share his vast knowledge of many topics. In any free time Kurt had, he could be found working on his many projects; building a cottage, renovating our home in Durham or riding his lawnmower down by the river.
Kurt will be dearly missed by his family and friends. Survived by his loving wife Cheryl, and his daughters, Shannon (Chris), Kirsten (Ken), and Anne-Marie. Proud grandfather of Teagan, Lochlan, Morgan, Brodie and Sophie. Kurt was predeceased by his Father Karl, Mother Martha, and will be missed by his siblings Bent, Ruth (John predeceased), Bodil, Esther (Patrick), Gertrud (Jens Anker predeceased), Keld (Helen).
In 2016, Kurt suffered two major strokes limiting his mobility. Though his life changed, his sense of humour remained as sharp as ever. Kurt continued to enjoy watching the news, playing cribbage, and going on outings and visits with family and friends.
No formal service will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made in Kurt’s name to the Calgary Food Bank, https://www.calgaryfoodbank.com/ or the Salvation Army, https://salvationarmy.ca/
