It is with reverence that we announce that Kevin Derek Stone passed away peacefully on January 1, 2026. What a blessing it was that his family had all been able to spend time with him over the holidays.
Kevin was born in Raymond, Alberta on November 1, 1955, the youngest of Gordon and Nora (Thompson) Stone’s five children. He held fond memories of his time in Raymond and often considered returning. His family moved to Calgary when Kevin was 12. Some of his favourite memories growing up included playing basketball, driving cars fast, listening to loud music, and being the most handsome brother (but never looking as good as Sharon).
Following high school, Kevin volunteered to serve as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Fukuoka, Japan for two years. He struggled with the language for several months, one time staring at a sunset with a lady on the train platform and then turning to her and saying, “What a beautiful belly button!” He loved his experience, mastered the language and used it throughout his life every time he saw someone he could converse with. Every family dinner he would begin with the phrase that expresses deep gratitude for the meal by proclaiming “Itadakimasu!”
After returning from his mission, he met his sweetheart at a dance. They courted for a few months and were married on November 17, 1977 in the Cardston Alberta Temple. Their marriage was his greatest treasure and he and Dana exemplified a profound love for each other that his children have tried to emulate. They truly were best friends. Some of their best memories together were in their beginning years when they were poor as dirt. Later in life they had a great time travelling together to places like England, Boston, Mexico, Turks and Caicos, and Kevin Montana.
Early in their marriage, they moved to Rexburg, Idaho where they both attended Ricks College. He graduated and then spent most of his career as a real estate agent in Calgary. He loved that his job allowed him to meet new people and spend time helping them with a big decision. He was awarded the 2011 Realtor of the Year award by the Calgary Real Estate Board for integrity and community involvement. He also participated on numerous committees for the Real Estate Board.
Kevin enjoyed being active in the community. He loved flipping pancakes at many stampede breakfast’s. He coached countless of his kids’ soccer, basketball, and softball teams. His service included many years involved with Bow River South Basketball Association, with four years as President. He also loved reffing basketball especially when teams played Stony Plain because the fans would chant, “Go Stony!”
Kevin was happiest when he was serving those around him. He didn’t need to be asked - he would just show up and do what needed to be done. He developed basements, built decks, fences and hauled rocks for family - even when it meant he was really sore for the week after. He just enjoyed helping too much to quit! He was passionate about service and would often see a need in someone that others missed. His family became accustomed to him bringing strangers home for dinner.
Kevin was a wonderful father and hero to his three children. He taught his kids how to use tools, how to be independent, and how to serve and love others. He believed that life is a wonderful ride, meant to be fun, and that happiness is a choice to make each day. There was never any question as to his love for his children.
It’s hard to explain just how friendly Kevin was. It was his gift. He genuinely loved becoming friends with anyone he came across. The ripple effect of his warmth towards even total strangers will be one of his lasting legacies. He loved people and getting to know them.
Kevin was a faithful and devoted member of his church. He served as a ward mission leader, primary teacher, youth leader and Bishop among many others. He especially loved serving amongst the youth and felt joy in their success. He shared his love for Jesus Christ effortlessly and freely and exemplified it in the way he lived his life.
Kevin was predeceased by his parents Gordon and Nora (Thompson) Stone and older brother Bill. Kevin is survived by his loving wife of 48 years Dana (Neville) Stone; his children Kristine (Steve) Smyth, Kyle (Zoe) Stone, and Kandace (Geoff) Smith. He is also survived by his 10 grandchildren whom he adored, his brothers Dennis (Karen) Stone, Robert (Diana) Stone, his sister Sharon (Jim) Schaffer, and sister-in-law Lynnette Stone.
A Funeral Service will be held for Kevin at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints - Parkland Chapel (14540 Parkland Blvd SE, Calgary) on Saturday, January 17, 2026 at 10:30 am. To watch the live webcast of the service click this link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/87873262788
