Kenneth Harry Christensen passed away peacefully after a brief and unexpected battle with pancreatic cancer.
Born on October 4, 1955, in Edmonton, Ken was predeceased by his parents, George and Melinda Christensen; his beloved son, Trevor; and his brothers, Dale and Leslie.
Ken possessed a remarkable intellect and an insatiable curiosity about the world. He began university at the age of sixteen and earned an Engineering degree from the University of Alberta. His passion for learning never waned. Throughout his life he continued to expand his knowledge, earning an MBA, CPA, CFA, and an LLB from the University of London.
An avid reader, Ken was particularly drawn to history, philosophy, and rhetoric. He admired Aristotle's three pillars of persuasion-ethos, pathos, and logos-and sought to understand not only how people think, but how ideas shape the world. Whether discussing current events, history, finance, or literature, he brought both insight and thoughtful analysis to every conversation.
Beyond his academic achievements, Ken's greatest strengths were his resilience, generosity, and commitment to helping others. A devoted member of Alcoholics Anonymous for more than twenty-one years, he gave freely of his time, experience, and encouragement to countless people seeking recovery.
The friendships he built and the lives he touched through service were among his proudest accomplishments.
Ken is survived by his loving partner, Patti Dolan; his stepsons, Casey (Lindsay) and Jesse (Gavin); as well as many friends, colleagues, and members of the recovery community who will miss his wisdom, wit, and steadfast presence.
One of the quotations Ken appreciated came from Theodore Roosevelt: "Far and away the best prize that life has to offer is the chance to work hard at work worth doing." Ken's life reflected that belief. He pursued knowledge relentlessly, faced challenges with determination, and dedicated himself to work that mattered-whether in his profession, his relationships, or his service to others.
Another quote that captures his spirit is from Winston Churchill: "We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give." Ken's legacy is not found in his many credentials, but in the knowledge he shared, the support he offered, and the lives he enriched through his generosity and kindness.
Even in his final days, Ken retained his characteristic wit and practicality. When asked what message should be shared with his friends, he replied simply: "Tell everyone I'm kaput." Those who knew him will recognize the humor, honesty, and acceptance behind those words.
I am also deeply grateful to the incredible team at Rosedale Hospice for the amazing care they provided to Ken and the compassion and support they showed both of us. They made an incredibly difficult journey gentler, and I will always be grateful for that.
In lieu of flowers, if desired, donations may be made to Rosedale Hospice in Ken's memory.
At Ken's request, he will be interred with his family in a private service at the Tomahawk Cemetery, Tomahawk, AB.
