Joseph Guy Carriere

October 31, 1937 — June 15, 2025

Calgary, Alberta

It is with heavy hearts the family announces the peaceful passing of Joseph GUY Carriere, 87, father, brother, uncle and friend on June 14, 2025 at Brentwood Care Facility in Calgary, Alberta.

Born October 31, 1937 to Rose (nee Bouvier) and Arthur Carriere at San Clara, Manitoba he was the 11th of 14 children, two of his sisters died in infancy. His early childhood involved helping on the family farm, attending classes at Walker School, being involved with the Ste. Claire Church and living life in a close-knit community.

Guy was a labourer at many different jobs but especially loved working on the paving crew. He enjoyed his 18 years as the night shift maintenance man at the Sunrise Rehab Centre in Calgary.

When Guy moved to Calgary in 1966 he met Veronica Goodeye and together they had one son Jason.

An important moment in his life, Guy recalled watching the papal parade in 1976 and as Pope John Paul II drove by he made the sign of the cross in front of Guy. Guy wonderingly recalled that at that moment he felt a life altering sensation of warmth run through his body and from that day forward he lived a life of sobriety. He called it a miracle!

In 1999 Guy met his soulmate Solveig Holmes who was always his “Danish Cookie”! They shared many devoted and loving years together until her death in 2021.

Guy was very proud of his Metis heritage and was a strong supporter of the Metis Federation. He enjoyed a good argument. His most favourite past time was talking. And if he could find an audience to listen to him talk about the Metis people then that was his greatest joy.

Guy was predeceased by his parents, his partners Solveig and Veronica, his brothers Albert (Yvette), Ephrem (Irma), Marcel (Catherine), Herve (Albertine), Florian, Ferdinand (Stella), and his sister Florence Arcand (Jean) and two sisters in infancy as well as brothers-in-law Nelson Cockerill, Lars Porath and Dale Laliberte.

Guy is survived by his son, Jason Carriere (Tammy), four grandchildren Connor, Jordan, Hope, and Ashley; his sisters Simone Cockerill, Noella Porath, and Theresa Holtby (Bert) and his brother Charles Carriere (Gloria); as well as numerous nieces and nephews and cousins.

The funeral service will be held June 27th at 1:30 PM at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, (1525-45 St SE, Calgary, Alberta)

Interment for both Guy and Solveig will be held in San Clara, MB at a later date.

If one so desires memorial donations may be made to the Ste. Claire Cemetery Fund, c/o Box 212, Roblin, MB R0L 1P0

The family extends a special thank you to the staff at the Brentwood Care Centre for their patient and understanding care of Guy.
