Jasmes Douglas McLaws

March 2, 1952 — July 12, 2025

Calgary, AB

James McLaws passed away on Saturday, July 12, 2025 in Calgary at the age of 73 years. James was born in Calgary. While in his teen years the family moved to Edmonton where he graduated from Harry Ainlay High School. James joined the military reserves and completed business courses at NAIT. He met and married Irma (nee Kunz) and together they raised their two sons and enjoyed many family adventures. After going their separate ways, James eventually met his partner Mariya Savchyn. They have shared many special memories over the past 15 years. James took great pride in serving in the Canadian Forces Air Force Reserve as a member of the 418 Squadron, the City of Edmonton Squadron. These were some of his fondest memories and where he found a true and lifelong friend in Doug Engberg. He continued with his love of flying and planes working in the industry in various roles some of which were fight instructor for small private aircraft, mechanic, and eventually went on to create a charter for personnel movement in the oil industry from Cold Lake, AB to Edmonton and Calgary. This was one of his finest achievements. Although it was not to last long, James and his family moved back to Edmonton where he later went into the oilfield services, first as a wireline operator and then into sales, ultimately concluding his career in this field.

He will be lovingly remembered by his sons, Chris (Lisa) McLaws, of Strathmore, AB, and Michael (Wade) McLaws, of Wavell Heights, Australia; grandchildren, Eric, Madeline, Robert, and Benjamin; partner Mariya Savchyn; and many more family and friends. Survived by his brother Bill (Rene) McLaws, of Edmonton, AB; James was predeceased by his parents Gordon and Jean McLaws and sister Cathy. James was a very loving, thoughtful and respected man who will be greatly missed by all his friends and family.

James loved the outdoors, nature, and fishing, especially Salmon fishing off the west coast. He had a love for dogs, having dogs while he grew up and in adulthood, instilling canine love in both his sons. James loved being a grandpa and very much enjoyed spoiling his grandchildren with love and gifts and very much enjoyed family get togethers.

A Memorial Service for James will be held at a later date.
