Jan Josef Novotny, born on August 2, 1939, in Zlín, Czechoslovakia, passed away peacefully in Calgary, Alberta, on May 7, 2025, at the age of 85. Jan's journey through life was marked by his dedication to his Catholic faith, family, passion for cooking, and deep commitment to his community.
Jan's early years were spent in Karvina after his family moved from Zlín. He completed his studies in Agriculture, a foundation that would shape his future endeavors. At the age of 23, he met the love of his life, Helena, and they married on October 24, 1964. In 1968, with a young son, Peter, the couple made the significant decision to immigrate to Canada, where they chose to settle in Calgary.
An active member of the Czech community, Jan enjoyed dancing and attending various events in his youth. He completed 2 years of mandatory military service in the Czechoslovak army from age 19 to 21. In 1975, Jan and Helena moved their family of 5 to an acreage east of Calgary, where they cultivated both a beautiful garden and cherished memories together. Jan particularly found joy in tending to animals and immersing himself in the joys of rural life.
Beyond his dedication to family and work, Jan had a profound appreciation for cooking and baking. He spent countless hours in the kitchen, crafting special dinners and traditional Czech dishes, particularly during special occasions such as Easter and Christmas. His dedication to culinary arts was exemplified when, at the age of 57, he returned to school and earned a Professional Cooking Diploma, proving that it is never too late to pursue one’s passions.
Jan also enjoyed spending Sunday evenings engaging in card games of crib with family, creating warm and lasting bonds over laughter and competition. His faithful spiritual life included being a Knight of Columbus and a devoted member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Calgary, further reflecting his commitment to his faith and community.
Jan is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Helena; sons, Peter Novotny (Julie Novotny), John Novotny (Melissa Novotny); daughter, Patricia Novotny along with 8 grandchildren, Alison (Graeme), David (Kristin), Lydia, Miriam, Xavier, Teresa, Anna Claire, and James. He is further survived by 6 great-grandchildren Ondrej, Mabel, Sophie, Annie, Lucy, and Cole. He was predeceased by his parents, Jakub and Vlasta Novotny; sister, Marie; brother, Vaclav; and nephew, Vaclav.
The legacy of Jan Josef Novotny will be cherished by all who knew him. His kindness, culinary talent, and unwavering love for his family will live on in their hearts.
