James Keith Vanderploeg

February 14, 1960 — June 11, 2025

Calgary, Alberta

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of James Keith Vanderploeg, on Wednesday, June 11, 2025 at the age of 65 years, known to many as “Georgetown Jimmy”—a loyal friend, a beloved “fun uncle,” a dog lover, and a man with a heart far bigger than the hardships he carried.

Born on Valentine’s Day, 1960, in Prince George, British Columbia, Jimmy came into this world with a tough road ahead. Raised primarily by his loving grandparents, who meant everything to him, he was deeply shaken when they passed away while he was still in his teens. Life without their guidance was difficult, but Jimmy always found strength in the people around him—friends who became his chosen family and who, in turn, were lucky to have his unwavering loyalty.

In his younger years, Jimmy struggled with the absence of steady parental guidance. The streets could have pulled him under, but it was the strength of his friendships that kept him afloat. Later, he made the big move to Ontario in 1987 with his dear friends Peter and Karen, where he became an irreplaceable part of their family. He earned the name “Georgetown Jimmy” and took on the role of “fun uncle” to Andrea and Jeremy - roles he embraced with his whole heart.

In 2020, he moved with his chosen family to Alberta, determined to find a better path. He entered rehab and fought hard for a new chapter. Though sobriety didn’t last forever, and alcoholism eventually took its toll, his effort and courage were real and meaningful. He didn’t give up easily.

In 2022, a light entered Jimmy’s life when he discovered siblings he never knew he had—brothers Dave and David, and sister Brenda. He was able to meet Dave and Brenda, and though he never met the other David, the connection was real and important. The reunion meant a great deal to him, even in his final years.

Jimmy lived a life that was far from easy, but it was honest, raw, and full of heart. He may have stumbled, but he never lost his warmth, his humour, or his willingness to lend a hand. He was a man of grit, loyalty, and undeniable charm.

He leaves behind friends who loved him like family, family who only just found him, and a legacy of kindness that will not be forgotten.

Rest in peace, Georgetown Jimmy. You will be sorely missed.
