Calgary, Alberta

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Iris Bernice Rebitt, affectionately known as Bernie who left us on May 9, 2020, in Calgary, Alberta. Born on February 19, 1933, in Depot Harbour, Ontario, Bernice lived a life full of love, warmth, and compassion.

Bernie began her working life in her teenage years at a shoe factory in Cambridge, Ontario. However, her most cherished role was as a mother and homemaker after starting her family. Her dedication to her family was evident as she embraced the joys of motherhood with an open heart and welcoming spirit. Even those who weren't her immediate children were treated as such and everyone was family. Bernie had a talent for making everyone feel at home. She was known for her open motherly arms, always welcoming friends and family alike. Her nurturing nature extended beyond her own family to anyone in need, offering a gentle hand and affection.

In the mid-1950s, Bernie moved to France with her beloved husband Ronald to support his career in the Air Force. It was in this picturesque setting that they welcomed two beautiful children into their lives. Their third child completed their family upon their return to Canada, born in North Bay, Ontario. Despite her dislike of flying, Bernie showed unwavering support for Ronald’s passion for aviation and his love of planes, exemplifying the strength of their partnership. It was only in later years that she had him appreciate more time on solid ground as they soaked in the beautiful scenery of the Rocky Mountains.

An avid gardener and bird watcher, Bernie found great joy in her connection with nature and all creatures, large and small. Her love for music was profound; she was a devoted fan of Keith Urban and had a long-standing admiration for Engelbert Humperdinck, joyfully attending many shows across North America, often with her daughter by her side.

Bernie's cherished family includes her daughter Debbie (David), and her sons Brian (Alana) and Bruce (Cesha). She took immense pride in her grandchildren: Christopher (Michelle), Lyndsay, Michael (Alycia), Danielle, and Cassidy, as well as her great-grandchildren Sophie, Abigail, Alix, Gavyn, and Krystyan. She is also survived by her brother Eddie Huddleson; and close family friends, Suzi and DeeDee.

She is preceded in death by her siblings Bill, Doug, Bundt, Tindy, and Wilma, and by her parents, Gertrude Rose and William Huddleson.

Despite passing during the pandemic, which prevented the family from gathering for a proper celebration of life, Bernie's legacy continues to shine brightly through those she leaves behind. With the recent passing of her beloved husband of 64 years, her family has chosen to honor their reunion with a Celebration of Life scheduled for January 17, 2026, Marlborough Community Center (636 Marlborough Way SE, Door 3, Calgary, AB) beginning at 2:00PM. Family and friends are invited to join and share in the celebration of life and love.

The love and memories of Iris Bernice Rebitt will be cherished by all who were fortunate enough to know her. Her spirit, compassion, and devotion to family remain a shining example of love for future generations.

In Lieu of flowers, the family invite you to donate to the Calgary Humane Society
