Ian Ross Shields

Ian Shields passed away holding onto his sweetheart Arda's hand in Calgary, AB on Saturday, November 15, 2025. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Arda; children Laura Jones, Karen Lloyd (Owen), John (Annaluise), and Merry Yoon (Lloyd); 20 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; siblings Clair (Rochelle), Carrol Penner, Alaine Maw (Richard). He was predeceased by his daughter Eda, brothers Rob and David, parents Eunice and Reed, as well as countless dear friends.

Ian was born in Lethbridge, AB on November 25, 1942. He grew up in Glenwood, AB, Montana and Cardston, AB. After serving a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Scotland, he attended Brigham Young University and then dental school at the University of Alberta. He met the love of his life Arda, and they were married in 1967. They eventually made their home in Salmon Arm, British Columbia for nearly 50 years before moving to Calgary, AB.

A devoted family man and a quiet but steady leader, Ian spent his life in service to others. He practiced as a dentist for nearly 50 years, caring for generations of patients with compassion and dedication, volunteering his skills where-ever he could. He was deeply involved in Scouting, contributing decades of mentorship and leadership.

Ian also gave lifelong service to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where his efforts were instrumental in helping the local congregation grow from a small dependent branch into a thriving ward. His commitment, faith, and dependability made him a cornerstone of the community.

Known for his tireless work ethic, generous spirit, boisterous laugh, and booming singing voice, Ian was rarely without a project on the go-usually one meant to help someone else. He had a natural gift for seeing what needed to be done and offering his hands and heart freely. Ian’s legacy is one of faith and of service to others. He will be profoundly missed by all who were blessed to know him.

A Funeral Service will be held for Ian at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints - Sundance Chapel (100 Sunpark Drive SE, Calgary) on Friday, November 21, 2025 at 11:00 am. Interment will take place in Cardston Cemetery (Cardston, AB) on Saturday, November 22, 2025 at 1:30 pm.
