George Wilfred Peterson
September 21, 1953 — February 19, 2023
George Wilfred Peterson, dedicated husband, father and loving grandfather passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 19, 2023 at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary, Alberta. He was 69 years old.
George was born in Selkirk, Manitoba on September 21, 1953 where he grew up in a small home near the Red River. As a young man he trained to be a draftsman and came to Calgary at the height of the oil boom in 1979, and worked for Calgary Power (later TransAlta Utilities) for about 12 years. After leaving TransAlta George worked several more years as a drafting contractor, barbecue technician, and sales associate before retiring early due to mounting health problems.
George liked fast cars and motorcycles and was involved in motorcross racing when he was young. He enjoyed watching NASCAR racing and fulfilled a dream when George got to drive a NASCAR around the track in Las Vegas. He loved to travel, and took many road trips in his camperized Volkswagen van with his wife and family. George enjoyed working with his hands and nearly always had some project on the go, whether renovating the basement, painting the living room, adding a deck to the house, creating beautiful stained glass or in his later years, acrylic painting.
George had a ready smile and made friends easily, even in his last few years living at the Dr. Vernon Fanning Care Centre. He had a zest for life and did not give it up easily – a fact that earned him the nickname “Energizer Bunny”, because no matter how many health challenges George faced, he kept going and going and going. George had a great sense of humour and loved to laugh and tease. Right up to the day he died George was literally still smiling.
George is survived by his wife of 33 years, Elizabeth Peterson (nee Francis), sons Chris (Emily) Francis of Brentwood Bay, British Columbia, Harley (Sarah) Peterson of St. Paul, Alberta, and Zach Peterson of Glasgow, Scotland. He is also survived by his four delightful grandchildren, Chloe Francis of Brentwood Bay, British Columbia, and Zane, Katie and Zoey Peterson of St. Paul, Alberta. George is also survived by his sister Darlene (Bob) Lawrie of Winnipeg, Manitoba. He was predeceased by his parents, Wilfred and Norma Peterson of Selkirk, Manitoba.
