Edward Kubota

Edward Kubota, son of Takayuki Kubota and Anne Seidle, passed away Saturday, July 18, 2020, aged 87 years. He is pre-deceased by wife, Grace (nee Selman); daughter Marnie; brother Ronald; and survived by children, Clifford Kubota (Agata Belcastro); Roxanne (Terry) Nemeth; Candice (Paul) Sephton; Rochelle (Timothy) Bliek; partner of 29 years, Lois Sellars; 12 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; siblings James, Edna, and Richard.
Edward Kubota was the second child of five born to immigrant parents in Raymond, Alberta. He revered both his father (from Japan) and mother (from Czechoslovakia) for their courage and fortitude shown in difficult times and compelling circumstances. Following their 1952 separation/divorce, home and farm responsibilities typical of the day increased for the children, and Ed helped care for the family and work the farm with his Dad, cultivating early in his life a profound work ethic and firm sense of resolve.
From Raymond, Edward married sweetheart Grace Darlene Selman. They bought a house in Lethbridge, where the first four of five children were born: a son and three daughters, Ed being employed (soon to manage) A.D. Palmer Supplies Ltd. In 1965, the family moved to Calgary, where another precious and lovely daughter was born, and soon afterward Edward purchased the company from Delbert Palmer, renamed it Palm-Aire Distributors Ltd., and successfully operated it for many years, retiring from daily operations only five years previous to his passing.
Ed felt fortunate to live near his parents throughout most of his life. Ed’s children recall regular family visits to grandparents and all their relatives, Christmases spent in Calgary, and visits to family in Lethbridge and Edmonton. Summer vacation meant trips to B.C. and many camping adventures. Deeply grounded in Scouting from his youth, Ed loved the mountains; in summer riding and racing motorcycles, and in winter, hunting big game with friends, bringing home meat and many tales of adventure. July 1st usually found the family back in Raymond, enjoying the Parade and family reunion.
In 1990, his wife Grace, beloved mother of their five children, passed on suddenly. In time, Ed met Lois Sellars, and over some 29 years, traveled together with a 5th-wheeler, made trips to Hawaii, Phoenix, Ottawa, visited each other’s families and friends, and enjoyed their company greatly until circumstances of health intervened in early 2020. Always, Ed felt blessed to meet, know, and love his grandchildren and great grandkids. It was easy to feel his love for these little ones.
In business, Ed Kubota was ambitious but fair-minded. Ed’s farm-wise creativity and penchant for innovation led to products like the oilfield-duty coathook, and hosting advances in HVAC technology. Ed was artistic and very musical, ready to pick up a guitar, or help compose a drawing. He was memorable as an optimist, a believer in good things to come. He committed himself to thinking abundantly and instinctively took a good-faith approach to dealing with everyone he met. We remember Ed Kubota as a man, a father, and a friend we were fortunate and glad to have known. And we love him still. We miss his good cheer, his ready smile, and the way he always found a sincere compliment to offer. We miss the generosity of his love. Dad, goodbye for now, we’ll see you again.
