Donna Marie Caldwell (née MacLean)

May 15, 1942 — May 8, 2025

Calgary, Alberta

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Donna Marie Caldwell, (formerly, Donna Martini) (née MacLean), who left us on Thursday, May 8, 2025, in Calgary, Alberta, at the age of 82.

Born on May 15, 1942, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Donna led a compassionate and impactful life marked by a deep commitment to education and advocacy for those with disabilities.

Donna was an extraordinary Special Needs Counsellor, dedicating over 30 years of her life to the Calgary Catholic School District. Her intelligence and vivacity illuminated every room she entered, and her love for reading fueled her passion for teaching. A graduate of the University of Calgary with a BA in Education, Donna also earned a Master's in Education from Gonzaga University and concluded her academic journey at Gonzaga University with a PhD in Leadership Studies in 2001 - a testament to her unwavering pursuit of knowledge and commitment to making a difference.

Donna's life was rich in meaningful connections and fierce advocacy. She was a proud member of various organizations, such as the Alberta Association of Rehabilitation Centres (AARC), where she worked tirelessly to improve the lives of those with disabilities. Donna was a founding member of the Horizon Housing Board, as well as the Board Chair for Developmental Disabilities Resource Centre of Calgary (DDRC). She was also appointed to the Premier's Council on the status of Persons with Disabilities. Donna’s vision and leadership have left a profound impact on many people.

Every person who crossed paths with Donna knew her to be kind, confident, and a transformative force in their lives. With a vibrant personality, she had a unique ability to bond with others, irrespective of their background—whether they were affluent or struggled with life's burdens. Many remember her engaging conversations and her unyielding support, as she devoted herself to changing lives around her.

In her pursuits, Donna participated enthusiastically in numerous initiatives, frequently collaborating with dear friends for events in Ottawa. As someone who preferred to work in inner-city schools, her genuine care and understanding helped many children, particularly those with disabilities, feel valued and empowered. Her profound common sense and ability to connect with others made her a favorite cousin and a mentor to many, guiding the next generation with patience and wisdom. She had a special bond with her son Paul Fortch whom she welcomed into her family in 1972. Donna lit up with love and joy anytime she was with Paul. She loved him dearly and was so proud to call him her son.

Donna is survived by her husband of over 30 years, Gil Caldwell; special son, Paul Fortch; stepdaughter, Tracy Caldwell of Elkford BC; grandchildren, Kyler and Hope Bolton; sisters, Margaret Anne Bonham of Calgary, Alberta and Mary Jane Davidson (Ian Hignett) of St. Thomas, Ontario; nieces, Natalie Cowan (Mike), Janet Marshall (Sandy).
