Donald James Mawdsley

May 27, 1939 — March 5, 2024

Calgary

It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Donald James Mawdsley, surrounded by family on March 5, 2024.

Don is survived by his wife of 61 years, Carol (Rutledge), and their children Laura (Donald), Shannon, and David (Jackie). Don lives on through his grandchildren Sean, Matthew, Michael, and his "favorite granddaughter," Nicole, all of whom brought him immeasurable joy and pride. He is also survived by his sister Marilyn (Robert), nephews Bob and Chris (Jen), niece Leanne (Douglas), and their children Campbell, Jake, Julia, and Lauren. Don was predeceased by his parents Alec and Viola (Gilpin) Mawdsley, father-in-law Bill, and brother-in-law Bill (Rutledge).

Don was born in Foresters Falls, Ontario, on May 27, 1939. After several moves, his family settled in Shelburne, Ontario. Upon graduating from high school, he worked briefly with Ontario Hydro before starting a 35-year-long career with the Toronto Dominion Bank. Transferring within the bank led him and his family to relocate from Ontario to Calgary, Alberta in 1979. He spent 25 years post-retirement driving for Hertz.

Don and Carol bought their first trailer in 1968 and embarked on many camping trips for more than 50 years, including a cross-Canada trip and journeys into the United States. Together, they organized yearly family camping trips that provided us all with endless memories of fishing, boat rides, campfires with roasted marshmallows, card games, and laughter.

Traveling by truck and fifth wheel, Don loved escaping the cold and heading to Arizona for the winter with Carol and their beloved dog, Talker. He enjoyed collecting rocks along with his sister Marilyn when she flew down for a visit.

Don was an avid fisherman and loved to meticulously plan yearly trips with his “fishing boys.” He also loved woodworking in his garage and made or helped make many projects for friends and family.

In recent years, on most weekends, Don would look forward to getting a “Timmie's" and heading out to find garage sales with Laura and Nicole. Hearing of anyone paying full price would hold him in a state of disbelief and great displeasure.

Don regarded himself as "the boss," despite often claiming, “I’m always the last to know.” He lived his life, and lastly his death, on his own terms.

While we will love and miss you forever, the countless memories will keep our hearts overflowing with gratitude for the time we had.

Until we meet again.

Family and friends will gather in Calgary this summer for a party to remember and celebrate Don.
