Donald George Vanderveer

Don passed away peacefully with his family at his side on October 9, 2023 in Calgary, Alberta at the South Health Campus at age the of 86 years.

Don was born on September 30, 1937 in Sarnia, Ontario. He was raised and educated in Ontario. At the age of 17 years he joined the air force and served for 5 years (1954-1959) as an electrical technician. It was at the end of the 5 years when his hand was badly crushed in a work-related accident.

A beloved husband, he married the love of his life Deanna Doreen Vanderveer (nee Wright), in Corunna , Ontario on July 14, 1962. Together, they raised 3 children, Terry Lynn (Steve) Cooper of Calgary, AB, Scott (Leanne) Vanderveer of Chestermere, AB, and Lisa (Todd) Lamoureux of Edmonton, AB.

Don was favored with 14 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. Grandfather to Bre (Joel) Walker of Queens Creek, AZ, Nicholas John Cooper, Joshua (Meghan) Cooper of Australia, Emily (Matt) Whitley of Calgary, AB, David (Jorey) Vanderveer of Calgary, AB, CJ (Arrianna) Lamoureux of Fort Saskatchewan, AB, Emma Lynn Vanderveer, Jacob (Brittney) Cooper of Calgary, AB, Danika (Micheal) Hand of Stony Plain, AB, Rob (Katherine Sandusky) Vanderveer of Winnipeg, MB, Aaron Vanderveer of Strathmore, AB, Joseph (Bree) Lamoureux of Lloydminster, AB, Kaylee Dumachel of Edmonton, AB, and Serena (Austin Couto) Lamoureux of Millet, AB.

Brother-in-law of Darlene (Gerry) Bovin. Don was predeceased by his mother Abby Agnes Strachan, father George LeRoy Vanderveer (Roy), as well as his stepfather Norman Arnold, brother Douglas (Laura) Leroy Vanderveer, grandson Nicholas John Cooper, granddaughter Emma Lynn Vanderveer and sister-in-law Gloria Sandercott.

Don had several employment opportunities throughout his life. While living in Dorchester, Don and Deanna had an orchid greenhouse where they raised and sold many beautiful orchids. They moved out west to Calgary in 1982 where Don was always gainfully employed which included Westburne Electric. He and Deanna moved to Bragg Creek in 1994 and ran a successful bed and breakfast and returned to Calgary in 2004 to retire.

Don was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served faithfully in many callings. He particularly loved his call to serve in the temple.

A Funeral Service will be held for Donald at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints – Willow Park Chapel (940 Acadia Drive SE, Calgary, AB ) on Saturday, October 21, 2023 at 4:00 pm. Visitation and viewing will be from 3:00-4:00 p.m. (940 Acadia Drive SE Calgary, AB).

Cremation will take place at the Foothills Crematorium with inurnment to follow at Mountain View Memorial Gardens ( 1605 100 Street SE, Calgary, AB) on October 24, 2023.

In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, tributes may be made to the Veteran’s Association Food Bank (#10, 820 28th Street NE Calgary AB T2A 6K1 403-367-8387)
