Diana Jean Mansell
January 28, 1943 — March 12, 2023
Diana Jean Mansell, RN, PhD, passed away on Sunday, March 12, 2023. She is survived by her children Diana (Eric) and Will (Venessa); her grandchildren Megan (Luke), Max (Beth), Sydney, Matias, Shannon, Tomas; her sister Peggy, and her nieces Stephanie (Trevor), Sharon (David), and Jennifer (Paul).
For all that knew Diana, she was a nurse through and through, even traveling to England to specialize in orthopedics as a young woman, then moving to Alberta to continue her nursing career. However, she still felt the need to learn and grow.
She studied at the University of Calgary, receiving her BA in Religious Studies in 1984, her MA in History in 1986, and finally her PhD in The History of Nursing in Canada in 1996. She was the author and editor of several publications, including Forging the Future: A History of Nursing in Canada (2003), and Bedside and Community: 50 Years of Contributions to the Health of Albertans from the University of Calgary (2020). Diana later became a Senior Instructor in the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Calgary where, over the years, she taught hundreds of appreciative students. For many years, she was also an active leading member of the Calgary Branch of the Historical Society of Alberta.
Diana will be remembered fondly for her many contributions to the community and charitable organizations in Calgary (notably Habitat for Humanity and The Alex), for her sharp sense of humor, and for her willingness to reach out and help others. She was also a keen motorcyclist and a dedicated dog lover.
Diana will be greatly missed, but her life and spirit will continue to serve as an inspiration.
