Dennis Eugene Francis

August 13, 1940 — November 7, 2025

Calgary, Alberta

It is with profound sadness, yet gratitude for a life well-lived, that we announce the peaceful passing of Dennis Eugene Francis on November 7, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born at the Grace Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba on August 13, 1940, Dennis embraced a life of adventure and exploration from the beginning. A brilliant mind, he graduated from the University of British Columbia (UBC), holding a major in Physics and Mathematics with a minor in Geology and Geophysics—a perfect foundation for the remarkable career that followed. Always ready with a keen observation and a sharp sense of humour, Dennis approached life as a perpetual student, constantly learning, reading, and seeking new intellectual frontiers.

Dennis dedicated himself to an illustrious career with Imperial Oil and demonstrated a remarkable talent for finding oil. His work took him and his family across the globe, leading to significant roles, including Exploration Manager for Esso Malaysia in the 1980s. This global chapter saw the family moving to fascinating locales like Malaysia, Brasil, and Texas, embodying his adventurous spirit. Even after retiring, Dennis never stopped traveling, continuing to seek out the beautiful beaches of Far East Asia and Latin America.

This year was especially meaningful for Dennis; he celebrated his 85th birthday and had the joy of welcoming his first great-grandson, Andre, into the world. He is lovingly remembered and survived by his partner, Jariah, and his daughters, Krista (Paul Poscente) and Allison (Gary Braun). He was a cherished grandfather to Michael (Chelsea), Dana (John), Sophia (Josh), Lucas, and Matthew. He also leaves behind his sister, Lois (John Potts), his brother, Gordon (Doris), as well as many relatives and friends.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Joan Francis (née Burton), and his parents, Helen (née Nelson) and Ray.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Salvation Army.

As per Dennis’ request, there will be no memorial service.
