It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Daniel Warner Heim on May 8, 2024, in Calgary, Alberta.
Born on June 19, 1964, in Montreal, Quebec, Daniel (Dan) was predeceased by his loving parents, Donald and Marlene Heim.
Dan is survived by his wife, Joanne; his loving sisters, Cammie (Mark LaCoste), Elizabeth (Glen Copeland); nieces, and nephews. His family and friends will always cherish his memory and the light he brought into their lives.
A man of many talents and passions, Dan’s journey began at Dorval High School and continued through Vanier College, culminating in his graduation from McGill University, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree. His educational pursuits laid the foundation for a life rich in creativity and intellectual curiosity.
Dan's professional life was marked by his commitment and expertise in various fields. He worked at U-Frame-It and Larson-Juhl picture framing businesses, and Gienow, Dirtt, and Screenco in manufacturing roles. His keen interest in running CNC machines and his technical prowess allowed him to computerize these machines himself, showcasing his resourcefulness and skill. His love for bicycles was legendary. He was not only an enthusiastic cyclist but also a skilled bike builder and repairer. He found joy in long rides, the thrill of trick riding, and the challenge of mastering maneuvers such as riding backwards, jumping ramps, and balancing on one wheel.
Music was another cornerstone of Dan's life. He was an accomplished trumpet player, singer, and an enthusiast of both the piano and the alto recorder. His love for classical music, musical history, and theory was evident to all who knew him. Dan had a special gift for technicality in music, which he seamlessly transferred to his work with manufacturing companies.
In addition to his musical talents, Dan was a skilled woodworker. His creations, including custom picture frames, jewelry boxes with intricate inlays of precious wood, and unique art pieces, showcased his craftsmanship and artistic flair. Each piece he crafted was imbued with his meticulous attention to detail blending his technical skills with creative vision. His heart and soul forever sought to unite order and beauty.
Dan’s gregarious nature, kindness, and compassion were hallmarks of his character. He was always willing to lend a helping hand, whether to family, friends, or strangers. His generosity of spirit and willingness to assist whenever and wherever needed will be remembered and missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Dan’s legacy of love, creativity, and kindness will continue to inspire and resonate with all who knew him. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
