Cardenio Segundo Alvarez, born on January 20, 1937, in Mulchen, Chile, passed away peacefully at Bethany Home Care on June 19, 2025, in Calgary, Alberta. He was a devoted deacon who served many years before being honored with the esteemed title of Elder in his community. His unwavering faith, dedication, and presence touched everyone around him, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of those he encountered.
Cardenio was known for his warm and caring personality, marked by boundless love and compassion. He took great pride in his appearance, always dressed to impress in a sharp suit, embodying the true essence of a gentleman. Cardenio had a unique tradition of carefully selecting his Sunday best, often planning the next week’s outfit as soon as he returned home from church, a testament to his attention to detail and personal pride.
Throughout his life, Cardenio was not only a pillar of faith but also a devoted family man. He was the best husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather anyone could ask for. To his family, especially to his 18 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, he was affectionately known as Papi Ñeño, a name that reflected his deep love and warmth toward them. His legacy of care and compassion lives on in the hearts of all who knew and cherished him.
He leaves behind his beloved wife, Magdalena, along with his children: Angélica (Luis) of Chile, Raúl Edgardo of Chile, Pablo (Tatiana) Mora of Toronto, Roxana Mora (Jaime) of Calgary, Graciela Gonzalez of Calgary, Jorge (Juana) Alvarez of Calgary, and Marcelo (Carolina) Alvarez of Calgary. Cardenio's grandchildren include Ignacio (Nibia) Soto, Melissa (Eric McKay) Soto, Franco Soto, Bruce Soto, Sofia LoGullo, David (Diana) Gonzalez, Nelson Gonzalez, Melanie Gonzalez, Aaron Alvarez, Alyssa Ventura, Natalia Levia Marcelo Alvarez, Diego Alvarez, Pablo Mora, and Stephanie Mora-Rivera, alongside his 5 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren in Chile.
He is also survived by the Reyes, Laffitte, Mardones, Rubio, families of Calgary, Mendoza from Edmonton, Ryley of Red Deer, Alberta, and the Danilo and Prisca Cortez family of Vancouver
Cardenio was predeceased by his mother-in-law, Graciela Reyes, grandson Esteban Soto, sister-in-law Violeta Reyes, nephew Pedro (Pelluco) Zambrano, and nephew Carlos Salgado.
A Funeral Service will be held on July 4, 2025, at the Rocky View Hispanic Mennonite Church in Rocky View County, Alberta, starting at 11:00 AM and concluding at 1:00 PM, with interment to follow at Mountain View Memorial Gardens. Family and friends are invited to join the family following the graveside for food, beverage and a time of reflection.
Cardenio Segundo Alvarez will be dearly missed by his family and community, remembered as a man of faith, love, and dedication whose legacy will endure.
There will be a box present at the service for cards and donations to the family. The family requests no flowers.
