On Wednesday, June 11, 2025 Bertha Pauline Kitchen, beloved wife of the late Ken Kitchen, of Calgary, Alberta passed away at home at the age of 81 years.

Bertha, born on Wednesday, July 21, 1943, in Hanna, Alberta. She was the beloved daughter of Bertha (nee Hiller) and Gottlob Schmidt and the youngest of their family comprised of sixteen children. When Bertha was very young, her family relocated to Calgary, where she would go on to build a life filled with cherished memories and deep connections.

From an early age, Bertha displayed a warmth and kindness that would follow her throughout her life. She met her future husband, Ken, in Grade three, where their friendship blossomed into romance by Grade six. Their bond led to marriage in 1961, a partnership built on love, shared interests, and an unwavering commitment to family.

Throughout their life together, Bertha and Ken shared a passion for the great outdoors. Weekends and summer holidays were often spent camping and fishing, where they made lasting memories alongside family and friends. A highlight of their traditions was during Thanksgiving, where for five consecutive years, they would embrace a unique celebration camping. In this time Bertha took great pride in cooking a large turkey dinner for all, often accommodating up to fourteen people, bringing everyone together around a shared meal in nature.

Bertha's life was characterized by her devotion to family, her love for nature, and her generous spirit. She leaves behind a legacy of warmth and togetherness that will be profoundly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Bertha is survived by her son Todd, her daughter Shelly and her husband John, and one grandchild Glenn all of Calgary. Besides her loving husband Ken of 59 years, Bertha is predeceased by her son Edwin and her parents Bertha and Gottlob Schmidt.

There will be no formal service. Cremation will take place at Foothills Crematorium.
