Arthur Nicholas Sunley

November 1, 1936 — September 29, 2021

It is with deep sorrow and sadness that we announce that on Wednesday, September 29, 2021 Arthur Sunley of Calgary, Alberta passed away at the age of 84 years.

Arthur was born in Edmonton, Alberta where he attended the University of Alberta and obtained his Electrical Engineering designation (Class of ’58). He met and fell in love with the girl next door (Minni) and they went on to have three daughters (Sollena, Caroline and Jaynne). He was a dedicated family man who showed great care and compassion to all, and especially for his loving wife Minni when her health failed.

He started as a young engineer with a focus on turbines. Art truly enjoyed his career and worked on many projects including one of his favorites, working on Navy ships off the east coast of Canada. Throughout his career, Art moved his family from Hamilton to Saskatchewan, Texas, Chicago, Montreal and settled in Calgary (even though he endured a lot of teasing, he remained an Oilers and Eskimos fan!).

Art was very fond of all his extended family in Edmonton, Leduc and the Redwater area and spent as much time as he could travelling to meet up with everyone. Art felt blessed to be part of the Bilsborrow and Sunley clans. He really appreciated all his cousins and extended family and enjoyed his nieces and nephews in the Edmonton area and Calgary (Daylene Podmore, Doug Podmore, Joe (Katrina) Podmore, Christine (Chris) Holmes, Michael Sunley and Greg (Brandie) Sunley. Art took time for everyone. We also want to acknowledge his very special and close companion Alta, who was very dear to Art later in his life.

Art enjoyed meeting people and could speak to anyone. He was always very interested in people’s careers, lives and challenges.

Some of Art’s many passions were reading, sailing, travelling, handyman projects and his greatest passion, singing. He took an interest in singing as a young boy and later in the 1970’s became a member of the Montreal Barbershop Quartet. He then joined the Calgary Music Makers which brought him great joy for many years.

We would like to acknowledge Bethany Calgary (Sunnyside) for their wonderful and attentive support of Art over the past few months. Their kindness towards Art will always be in our hearts.

Art is lovingly remembered by his daughters Sollena Leppard, Caroline Price, Jaynne Krowicki; his grandchildren Mary-Ellen Donais (Matt Donais), Stephanie Broda (Nathan Broda), Arthur Price (Alex Branson), Hokan Krowicki (Masako); great grandchildren Josephine, Corbin Patrick, Quinn; brother John Sunley of Wabamun, Alberta; and numerous other relatives and friends.

Art is predeceased by his wife of 49 years Minni Philomena Sunley (2008); his mother Kathleen Anne Sunley (1984); his father Ernest Stanley Sunley (1986); his mother in law Mia Philomena Lekisch (1993); his brother James (Jim) William Sunley (1997); and his sister Marie Anne Podmore (2016).

Due to covid restrictions and the uncertainties of this time, we will be celebrating Art’s life at a future date.
