Anna Leila Anderson (née Cumming) beloved wife, mother and grandmother passed away peacefully with family by her side on Saturday, July 13, 2024 at the age of 90 years. She is lovingly remembered by her children, Bruce (Anna), Glenn, and Janet (Greg); as well as Leila's grandchildren, Brenna, Aydan, Megan, Cody (Drew), Ginny and Sam. She was predeceased by her husband, Bill Anderson.
Leila was born and raised on the family farm near Kenton, MB to a Scottish father and Canadian mother during the depression. Leila told many stories of her life on the farm with her brothers Mel, Allen and Bruce. Her upbringing created in her a life-long love of horses, a love that she inherited from her father; riding her horse Ginger and the farm Clydesdales. Leila's life in Kenton also allowed her to develop a strong bond with her cousin, Doreen; who she continued to be close to throughout the years. After leaving the farm, Leila found work in Virden, MB in a bank and then at Schlumberger, where she met Bill Anderson. She and Bill were married in 1957. Bill's career moved them across the Prairies, raising three children along the way before finally settling in Calgary in 1966. They fell in love with the Rockies where they spent many happy days hiking, camping and enjoying the nature surrounding them; especially the flowers.
After her children were in school Leila returned to work at Bishop Carroll High School and the department of Social work at the University of Calgary. Leila was a strong advocate of the peace movement and social justice, working with multiple organizations. These actions developed in her a strong interest in politics, particularly provincial politics; which she followed closely. She continued her advocacy during retirement by helping people whenever she could.
Leila and Bill had a very close knit group of friends that they would meet with regularly at the Danish Canadian Club; referring to themselves as "the Vikings". Additionally, Leila continued her long friendship with Joan Rudy, who she met in Virden and whose path also took her to Calgary. Leila, Bill, Joan and her husband Harry regularly spent Christmas together with their families. The Anderson kids remember those family get-together's with great fondness.
Leila loved dogs, walking up to "flower hill" to look at the blossoms and found tranquility while surrounded by nature. Leila's greatest pride and joy was always her six grandchildren. She cherished every moment she spent with them.
A memorial service for Leila will be held at a later date.If friends and family desire, donations can be made to Ecojustice or the Calgary Women's Emergency Centre.
