Alex Portelance passed away peacefully at the Alberta Children's Hospital on Wednesday, June 17, 2026 at the age of 6 years.
Alex will be dearly missed by his parents Paula & Guy Portelance; siblings Joel, Anthony, Sierra (Mike) and predeceased by special brother Tommy; and nephews Sean, Liam & Lincon. He is also survived by his grandparents Fern "Pops" (Charmaine) Roy, Marie-Claire "Grandmama" Portelance and Marcel "Papere" Portelance (Carmen). Dear nephew to Yves (Lisette), Luc, Wally and great-aunt Linda. Alex was predeceased by Nana Pauli and adopted grandmama Docile McKay.
Alex was a cheeky, happy boy that rarely heard the word no and his family ensured he rarely ever cried. He loved to happily terrorize his older siblings by removing his oxygen line and making them panic. He would pull down every kitchen chair that he could reach. Alex had a great time walking around the hospital in his walker, getting on the elevator and pinching any ladies that he would see. From walking in the walker in the PICU and causing chaos, you would see a trail of lines and hear the best laughter coming from him. He will forever be loved by his parents, siblings, doctors and nurses. He was locally famous and even other patients knew his name.
Beyond family, Alex leaves behind an impressive medical team: Dr. Robin Clegg, Dr. Erika Vorhies, Dr. Deborah Fruitman, Dr. Mike Fridman, Dr. Laura Miles, Dr. Ashley Humber, Dr. Tamara Yee, Dr. Tanya Drews and all their supporting staff. Special nurses Natalie, Laura, Erin and all the Charge Nurses. Other care teams include his teachers Miss Kailea Hager and Miss Jenna Pinel; the PICU, Unit #2, the homecare team including Marcie, the GRIT team and untold others at the Alberta Children's Hospital. A huge thank you to Michelle T for ensuring that Alex was given to a family that not only needed him but was able to give him a beautiful, happy life. Alex is the absolute love and light of his family.
