David Alexander Mackinnon

June 30, 1949 — October 12, 2020

David was born in Meadowbank, Prince Edward Island to Mary (nee Porter) and Dick MacKinnon (now deceased). David passed away in Calgary, Alberta on Thanksgiving Day, a holiday he enjoyed more than any other.

David will be missed by his birth family: Mother, Mary and siblings – Peter, Natalie, Kelly, Timothy and his wife, Elizabeth. David will also be dearly missed by his second family: siblings – Jamie, Penelope and partner Amine, Mary, Joshua, Theresa and Bernadette and their mother Susan and their dad and step dad, Johnny. He will also be deeply missed by Karen Gabbidon, his caretaker and friend.

David spent his life between Charlottetown, North Carolina and Calgary – recognizable in each place, no doubt, for his layering of clothing even during the summer months.

David was a gentle soul who wouldn’t say an unkind word about anybody. He was patient, loyal and generous. He was highly intelligent and could be found reading books, doing Sudoku or writing random math equations down for fun. He always won when playing Trivial Pursuit. He had a zest for life which was evident through his love of music – from Tiny Tim to hymns of praise. He was often singing or whistling a tune.

David was a spiritual man and a proud member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. He was also a caring big brother and son. He spent many years of his life caring for children to whom he was a wonderful role model; who consider him part of their family; and whom he loved and cherished as family.

On behalf of the birth family, sincere thanks to the second family for the welcoming home and happy times you gave to David. Also, sincere thanks to Karen for the care and love that you gave to David during his sunset year. A man who has experienced the love of so many people has lived a rich life. May he rest in peace.

On behalf of all, thank you to the doctors and nurses at Unit 37 at the Foothills Hospital and to the dieticians, pharmacists and nurses at the Sheldon M. Chumir Health Centre. Flowers are gratefully declined. If relatives and friends so desire, memorial donations in David’s memory may be made to the Kidney Foundation of Canada, 310 – 5160 Decarie Boulevard, Montreal, Quebec, H3X 2H9 Telephone: 1-800-361-7494
